The practice of sewing or 'flowering' the fine cotton cloth put out to domestic workers by Glasgow manufacturers came to occupy thousands of women in the west of Scotland and northern Ireland; the largest firm in the 1850s, M'Donalds, had between 20,000 and 30,000 female employees on it books at the height of its properity. It was hard work for the girls: it took fourteen to sixteen hours work a day, six days a week, to make 12s.-but if a family contented itself with the woman doing half that and the man getting what he could on the handloom, it could still make a living from cottage industry.2
