John is head of household on the census of 2 April 1871 at New Galloway, Wigtonshire, Scotland, as John Murphy. He is a married 29 year old Iron Miner born in New Galloway, Wigtonshire. Enumerated with him were Jane Cain, Catherine Murphy and Hugh Murphy.8,9

John is head of household on the census of 3 April 1881 at 19 Taiglum, Stair, Parish of Stair, Ayrshire, Scotland, as John Murphy. He is a married male born circa 1841 in Wigtonshire and he works as a coal miner. Enumerated with him were Jane Cain, Catherine Murphy, Mary A.
