     Joseph Maurice Fern was born on 10 December 1909 at Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas.1 He was the son of James E Fern and Mary Ellen McCormick.

Joseph was enumerated with James E Fern on the census of 22 March 1920 at Ross Township, Cherokee County, Kansas, as Joseph Fern. He is an 11 year old single white male born in Kansas. His father was born at sea and his mother was born in Pennsylania.2
The following appeared in the Scammon paper dated 28 Apr 1939: Joe and Frank Fern, of Kansas City, were Scammon vistors last Sunday. Mrs Fern had visited her sons for 2 weeks and reports a splendid time.3
Joseph Maurice Fern married Constance Ryan, daughter of Joseph Ryan and Margaret Jane Brennan, on 23 November 1939 at St. Rose of Lima, Kansas City, Missouri. Miss Constance Ryan of Kansas City, Kans., and Mr. Joe Fern, of Kansas City, MO., were married November 23 in the St. Rose of Lima church. Mrs. Fern is a former resident of Mineral and Mr Fern is a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Fern of Scammon. Mr. and Mrs James Fern attended the wedding. The young couple will make their home in that city. Their many friends wish them much happiness.4 In between 1940 and 1955 Joseph Maurice Fern lived at Wichita, Sedgewick County, Kansas.5
Joe worked for United Fashion Door for several years. The first three children were born in Wichita.5

Joseph Maurice Fern died on 13 July 1987 at Overland Park, Johnson County, Kansas, at age 77.1 He was buried on 15 July 1987 at St. Joseph's, Shawnee, Johnson County, Kansas.1,5
