Charles was enumerated with Arthur Murphy on the census of 2 April 1871 at Provenhall, Shettleston, Larnarkshire, Scotland, as Clarde Murphy. He is a 16 year old male born circa 1855 in Dalry, Ayrshire. He is enumerated as a lodger and a coal miner.⁴

Charles Murphy married Catherine O'Hara, daughter of Bernard O'Hara and Grace Ferry, on 20 November 1874 at Neilston, Renfrewshire, Scotland.¹

Charles is head of household on the census of 3 April 1881 at Maryhill, Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland, as Charles Murphy. He is a 26 year old male born circa 1855 in Dalry, Ayrshire. He works as an iron stone miner. Enumerated with him were Catherine O'Hara, Charles Murphy, Elizabeth Murphy, John Murphy, Elizabeth O'Hara and Grace O'Hara.⁵

He is a 35 year old male born circa 1856 in Dalry, Ayrshire. He works as a coal miner. Enumerated with him were Charles Murphy, Arthur Murphy, Peter Murphy, Catherine Murphy, Patrick Murphy, Terence Murphy and Catherine O'Hara.⁶

Charles was enumerated with Hugh Waugh on the census of 31 March 1901 at Dunns Barrhill Rd, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland, as Charles Murphy. He is a 46 year old male born circa 1855 in Dalry, Ayrshire. He is enumerated as a lodger and is not working. This may or may not be Charles Murphy whose children are all enumerated at the Henry McLaughlin residence. Some of the details match: same age and same birth place.⁷
