Terence O'Hara

     Terence O'Hara was born on 17 January 1878 at Maryhill Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland.^1,2 He was the son of Patrick O'Hara and Margaret Carson.¹

Terence was enumerated with Margaret Carson on the census of 3 April 1881 at No 24 Lugton Row, Lugton, Dunlop, Ayrshire, Scotland, as Terence Harra. He is a 4 year old male born circa 1877 in Maryhill, Ayrshire.³

Terence O'Hara was a member of the immigration family of Margaret Carson on 19 June 1888 at Port of New York, New York City, New York County, New York; The immigrant family consisted of Margaret a 37 year old female listed as a wife; Terence, a 10 year old male and son; Margaret, 6 year old female and daughter; Mary, 4 year old female and daughter and Willie 2 year old and son. They are from Scotland travelling to North America. The ship is called the Cirassia and embarked from Glasgow.⁴

Terence was enumerated with Patrick O'Hara on the census of 7 June 1900 at Weir, Cherokee County, Kansas, as Terence O'Hara. He is a 22 year old single white male born Jun 1878 in Scotland as were both of his parents. He immigrated to the United States in 1887 and has been aresident for 13 years. He is not naturalized and works as a coal miner.⁵

Terence O'Hara married Margurite Marie Carruth, daughter of Mary (--?--).⁶

Terence is head of household on the census of 27 April 1910 at Murray Township, Coal County, Oklahoma, as Terrance O'Hara. He is a 30 year old white married male born in Scotland as were both of his parents. He has been married for 3 years. He immigrated to the United States in 1890 and is naturalized. He works as a coal miner and rents his home. This household is adjacent to the John Boyle household, step-father of Margurite. Enumerated with him were Margurite Marie Carruth, Patrick O'Hara and John B. O'Hara.⁶

Terence is head of household on the census of 27 January 1920 at Dewar, Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, as Terry O'Hara. He is a 41 year od white married male born in Scotland as were both of his parents. He rents his home and is a coal miner. Enumerated with him were Patrick O'Hara and John B. O'Hara.⁷

Terence was enumerated with Mary (--?--) on the census of 30 April 1930 at Murray Township, Coal County, Oklahoma, as Terence O'Hara. He is a 51 year old widowed white male born in Scotland. He was 28 years old when he was first married. Both of his parents were born in Scotland. He immigrated to the United States in 1887 and he is naturalized. He is the proprieitor of a gas station. He is enumerated as a son-in-law.⁸

Terence O'Hara died on 16 January 1961 at Ruth Wilson Hurley Manor, Coalgate, Coal County, Oklahoma, at age 82.²

Early Day Miner and First Resident of Manor Dies at 83 Years Requiem Mass for Terence "Terry" O'Hara will be held at 10 o'clock this morning (Thursday) at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Rev. Daniel Keohane. Born Jan 17, 1878 at Glasgow, Scotland, he came to the No. 5 mining area when he was a young boy and worked in the mines through his youth and until his retirement. After retiring he served for many years as justice of peace, living at Cottonwood; and after completion of Ruth Wilson Hurley Manor, he bcame the first resident in the home made possible by his boyhood friend, Gen. Patrick J. Hurley. His wife preceded him in death and he is survivied by two sons and one daughter; Pat O'Hara, Midwest City, John B. O'Hara, Santa Barbara, Calif. and Mrs Margaret Giacommetti, Pittsburg, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Jack McEwan, Amarillo, Texas; one brother, William O'Hara of Indigo, Calif. and a number of grandchildren. He died at the Manor at 5 o'clock Monday morning just one day before his 83rd birthday. Burial will be at Lehigh cemetery with Slater funeral home directing.² He was buried on 19 January 1961 at Lehigh Cemetery, Lehigh, Coal County, Oklahoma.²
