John was enumerated with Terence Higgins on the census of 15 April 1871 at Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland, as John Higgins. John is 6 years old and was born in Holytown, Lanarkshire.2
John was enumerated with Terence Higgins on the census of 3 April 1881 at Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland, as John Higgins. John is listed as a son and is 17 years old He was born in Holytown, Lanarkshire and works as a coal miner.3
An interesting side note is that at the baptism of his sister Isabella's 4th child (in America) - 1893) one of the sponsors is named as John HIGGINS. I searched the Ellis Island records and found this entry: 28 May 1892 - manifest for the "Germania" sailing from Liverpool #194 HIGGINS, JOHN M 28y unmarried Scot Glasgow (port).4
