Hugh Harrigan. This photo was taken 1 May 1930 on occasion of Hugh and Anna's 50th wedding anniversary.1
     Hugh Harrigan was born in August 1856 at Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.2,3 He was the son of Daniel Harrigan and Elizabeth Woods.

Hugh was enumerated with Daniel Harrigan on the census of 7 April 1861 at Dernconner Square, Auchinleck, Ayrshire, Scotland, as Hugh Harrigan. Hugh is 4 years old and was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire.4

Hugh was enumerated with Daniel Harrigan on the census of 14 June 1870 at Hickory Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, as Hugh Herrigen. Hugh is 13 years old and works as a coalminer. He was born in Scotland.5 Hugh Harrigan was the godparent at the baptism of Mary O'Hara on 30 November 1879 at Neshannock Catholic Church, Neshannock, Mercer County, Pennsylvania.6

Hugh Harrigan married Anna Marie McCormick, daughter of Bernard McCormick and Ellen O'Hara, on 1 May 1880 at St. Rose Catholic Church, Hermitage, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, other participants were Daniel McCormick.6,7,8

Hugh was enumerated with John Arthur Brady Sr. on the census of 5 June 1880 at Mineral Twp, Cherokee County, Kansas, as Hugh Harrigan. Hugh is listed as a 23 year old white male. He is a boarder and works as a coal miner. He was born in Scotland and both of his parents were born in Ireland.9

Hugh is head of household on the census of 1885 at Mineral Twp, Cherokee County, Kansas, as Hugh Harigan. Hugh is a 27 year old white male. He works as a coal miner. He was born in Ireland and he came from Pennsylvania. Enumerated with him were Anna Marie McCormick, Hugh Harrigan and Daniel Harrigan.10

Hugh is head of household on the census of 13 June 1900 at Mineral Twp, Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas, as Hugh Harigan. Hugh is a white male and was born Aug 1856. He has been married for 20 years and he is 43 years old. Both of his parents were born in Ireland. Enumerated with him were Daniel Harrigan, Bernard Bartholomew Harrigan, Edward A Harrigan, Angelo Harrigan, Joseph Harrigan, Elizabeth Ann Harrigan, Ellen H. Harrigan, Mary Grace Harrigan, John H. Harrigan, Anna Marie McCormick and Hugh Harrigan.11

Hugh is head of household on the census of 15 April 1910 at Ross Township, Cherokee County, Kansas, as Hugh Harrigan. Hugh is 52 years old and has been married for 30 years. He was born in Scotland and is a coal miner. His father was born in Ireland and his mother was born in Scotland. Enumerated with him were Anna Marie McCormick, Leo Harrigan, Bernard Bartholomew Harrigan, Edward A Harrigan, Angelo Harrigan, Joseph Harrigan, Ellen H. Harrigan, Mary Grace Harrigan, Loretta Harrigan, Blanche Harrigan, John H. Harrigan and Henry Harrigan.12

Hugh is head of household on the census of 13 March 1920 at Ross Twp, Cherokee County, Kansas, as Hugh Harrigan. Hugh is listed as a 63 year old white male. He immigrated in 1867 to Pennsylvania and can read and write. He was born in Ireland as were both of his parents. He works as a coal miner. Enumerated with him were Anna Marie McCormick, Mary Grace Harrigan, Anna Marie Harrigan and Daniel Harrigan.13

Hugh Harrigan was injured while in the employ of the Western Coal and Mining company on 12 January 1928 at Cherokee County, Kansas, Hugh was 71 years of age when the accident occurred. He was pumping water from the mine and in the process of repairing the failed pump a considerable amount of water containing dirt and small particles of rock were thrown into his face. Both corneas were damaged, the left more than the right. Hugh returned to work the next day and worked all day in spite of the pain. Over the course of the next few days, it was decided to remove the left eye. Hugh wore an eye patch until his death at the age of 95. His grandson, Hugh Ambrose Harrigan, always said that the old man would get out of a chair as if he had a spring under him.14,15

Hugh is head of household on the census of 8 April 1930 at Ross Township, Cherokee County, Kansas, as Hugh Harrigan. He is a 72 year old married white male born in Scotland. He was 22 years old when he first got married. His parents were both born in Northern Ireland.He is a farmer. Enumerated with him were Anna Marie McCormick.16
According to Marjorie Davis Harrigan, who married Hugh's grandson,Hugh lived to be 95 and had a farm in Corona, which is located between West Mineral and Roseland, just west of Scammon. Also known as Hap. He was red headed. According to Madeline Raineri, who married Jack Harrigan, a grandson, Hugh had an eye for the ladies even in his old age. Madeline remembers a story of Hugh being injured in Scammon. He was involved in a bar brawl and suffered a knife wound that opened up his stomach. He walked from Scammon to his home in Carona (holding himself together) where he wife, Anna, stitched him back together.17
The following appeared in the Scammon paper: It is reported by a local business man that the Western Coal & Mining Co. of Pittsburg, is anticipating sinking a shaft on the Harrigan farm about a quarter mile west of the Gay Parita some time this spring. This statement cannot be verified at this time but is will employ about 100 men.18
Hugh was widowed by the death of Anna on 25 November 1938.19,8
The following appeared in the Scammon paper: It is reported that a rig is busy on the Hugh Harrigan land at Carona propecting for coal. This is the location where it is said a shaft will be put down next spring. It is reported a good vein of coal has been found in the drill holes.20
The following appeared in the Scammon paper: Mr Hugh Harrigan celebrated his 81st birthday last Sunday. Quite a few relatives and friends assisted him in passing the day and wishing him many happy returns on the occassion.21

Hugh Harrigan died on 28 August 1951 at at the home of his daughter Nellie Priddy, Coffeyville, Montgomery County, Kansas.22,23
An obituary was in the Coffeyville newspaper: Funeral services for Hugh Harrigan, 95, father of Mrs. Ellen H. Priddy, 1116 East Eighth, will be at 9;30 a.m. Thursday in St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Scammon with the Rev. E.J. Steinberger, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Pittsburg. Harrigan died at the home of his daughter, where he had lived for the past six years, at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday. Although he had been in failing health for the past five years, he had been active until the time of his death. The body was taken from Coffeyville to Scammon Tuesday night. The Rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock tonight in the Naylor-Quinn Funeral Home in Scammon. Born August 5, 1856, in Ayshire, Scotland, at the age of nine he came to this country with his parents, sho settled in Hickory Corners, Pa. He lived there until he was 23 years old, when he was married to Miss Ann McCormick at Hickory Corners on May 1, 1879. They came to Kansas as bride and groom and settled near Scammon in the Pittsburg vicinity. Mrs. Harrigan died Nov. 25, 1938. He was employed in the coal mines in that vicinity until retiring at the age of 65. He then moved to a farm, located 2 and ½ miles west of Scammon, where he lived until moving to Coffeyville to make his home with his daughter. Harrigan was a member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church at Scammon. Besides his daughter here, he is survived by four other daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Carlson, Cherokee; Mrs. Mary Grace Nevins, St. Louis; Mrs. Blanche Elaine Graves, Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs Loretta Wright, Los Angeles; two sons, Leo Harrigan, Scammon, and Joseph A. Harrigan, now in Casablanca, Africa; 17 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Besides his wife and parents, six sons preceded him in death.23 He was buried on 30 August 1951 at St. Mary's Cemetery, Pittsburg, Crawford County, Kansas.24,23
