Edward Philpott

     

Robert E. Lewis: Birthyear calculated from 1850 Henry Co VA Census, age 76 = 1774. Birthplace of Maryland also from 1850 census. Parentage from Charles H. Philpott 'English and American Backgrounds of a Philpott Family Line of Virginia and Maryland' (1970) and from the will of David Philpott, filed in Guilford Co (now Rockingham) NC, dated 28 Feb 1781. In the latter, Mary Ann is named as the mother. Edward is also named as the son of David Philpott in his uncle John Philpott's will, Henry Co VA, dated 28 May 1819 (Book 3, page 26), proven 1822?. Edward appears in the following census' 1810 Patrick (tax list) 1820 Patrick: Male (b bef 1775), Female (b 1775-1794), Female (b 1794-1804), 2 Females (b 1804-1810), 5 Females (b 1810-1820), Male (b 1810-1820) 1830 Patrick: Male (b 1770-1780), Female (b 1780-1790), Female (b 1800-1810), 2 Females (b 1810-1815), Male (b 1810-15), Male (b 1815-1820) 1840 Henry: Male (b 1770-1780), Male (b 1810-1820), Female (b 1810-1820), Male (b 1835-1840), Female (b 1835-1840) 1850 Henry: Edward Philpott age 74 M b Maryland Edward Philpott Jr. age 26 M b Virginia Nancy Philpott age 32 F b Virginia Elizabeth H. Philpott age 1 F b Virginia These census records seem to show as many as 9 or 10 children, 8 females and one or two males. Patrick and Henry marriage records appear to name these as children: (daughters) Jane (md John Cahill 14 Jan 1823 in Patrick Co), Sinai (md Jacob Koger 22 Aug 1826 in Patrick Co), Ruth (md Christopher C. Mason 7 Nov 1833 in Patrick Co), Mary Ann (md George W. Dyer 7 Nov 1833 in Patrick Co), Martha (md William Turner 11 Dec 1837 in Henry Co) amd (son) Edward Jr. Census and marriage records seem to indicate a move from Patrick to Henry Co after 1833 and before 1840. Edward's wife (Martha) is indicated in the 1830 census but not 1840, suggesting her death during these years. There appears to be a young couple with two small children under 5 living with Edward in 1840, perhaps one of the married daughters and her husband. The age of their children would seem to suggest this was a couple who married in the middle 1830s. Ruth, Mary Ann, or Martha would all fit this timetable. Most likely of the three is Martha who married in Henry Co. No one of Edward Jr's age group is in the home in 1840. His marriage the next year in Patrick Co suggests he did not immediately accompany his father in his move to Henry Co. However by 1850 he and his wife and one year old daughter are living with Edward Sr. in Henry Co. Edward Philpott sold land in Patrick Co VA 20 Mar 1818 (Book 5, pp 185,186). Edward Philpott and wife Martha of Patrick Co VA sold land in Patrick Co VA to a William Turner of Patrick Co, 17 Mar 1827 (Book 6, page 599). Edward and Martha Philpott are listed as parents to Edward Philpott Jr. at latter's death.¹ Edward Philpott was born in 1776 at Maryland.

Edward Philpott died in 1853 at Henry, Virginia.
