He was born in Ayrshire and both parents were born in County Antrim. He attended school in the previous year.4 Angelo McCormick was the godparent at the baptism of Bernard Bartholomew Harrigan on 6 July 1885 at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas; Godparents were Barbara McCormick and Angelo McCormick.5 Angelo McCormick was the godparent at the baptism of Thomas J. Grady on 24 December 1890 at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas.6
A. McCormick is making arrangements to build a substantial and commodious dwelling.7
Angelo was enumerated with Ellen O'Hara on the census at Mineral Township, Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas, as A W McCormick. Angelo is white male aged 27. He was born in Scotland and is a miner. He came to Mineral Township from Pennsylvania.8 Angelo McCormick and Katherine Stewart obtained a marriage license on 22 April 1896 at Columbus, Cherokee County, Kansas.9
The following appeared in the Pittsburg paper: Miss Kate Stewart of this city, and Angelo McCormick, of Scammon, were united in marriage this morning at 8:30, at the Catholic church by Rev. Dr. Pompeney. It was a quiet affair, only a few of the relatives and most intimate friends being present. Miss Grace Stewart and John Stewart, brother and sister of the bride, acted as attendants. After the ceremony the happy couple were driven to the Opera House hotel, where they will remain until to-morrow, when they will go to Scammon, their future home.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Stewart, of the Opera house hotel, and is a highly esteemed young lady. The groom is an industrious and hard working man, and is highly respected by all of his acquaintances.10 Angelo McCormick married Katherine Stewart on 29 April 1896 at Pittsburg, Crawford County, Kansas.11
The following appeared in the Scammon paper: We learn that A. McCormick of this place and Miss Catherine Stewart of Pittsburg, were united on Wednesday. The best wishes of the Miner and a host of friends are with them for a happy life.12 Angelo McCormick was the godparent at the baptism of Mary Grady on 3 June 1896 at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas.13,14
The following entries were either found in the Scammon Court Dockets or the local paper and paint an interesting picture of Angelo during the 1890-1900 time frame.
Angelo McCormick disturbing the peace. Fined $5.25. Thos O'Hara same.15 Angelo McCormick Drunk and Disorderly. Note signed by Owen McLean.16 Angelo McCormick did assault Mrs. Anna Wallace and used insulting indecent language and threatening language towards Mrs. Anna Wallace and was then and there guilty of violent turbulent conduct toward the said Mrs. Anna Wallace. Fined $5 and $3.75 court cost. Released on John Collins' note.17
The following appeared in the Scammon paper dated 30 Jul 1897: Angelo McCormick was arrested Monday morning of last week and plead guilty to keeping a club house in Fleming. He got a $100 fine and costs, Angelo should have known better than to leave Scammon. When anyone leaves to start a saloon they are throwing away a fortune. As it is now, Angelo has located in Girard for ninety days.18 John Morton made complaint that on the 14th day of May, Angelo McCormick did unlawfully violate the Prohibitory Liquor ordinance of the City of Scammon. City rev'd $13.25 as bond for his appearance.19
Between Oct 1898 and Oct 1901, there are 21 instances where Angelo McCormick is cited for "violation of the Prohibtory Liquor Ordinance" or running a club house. The fine and court cost for most of these violations never exeeds $10. On 29 Aug 1901, the following entry is made in the Police Docket: "Angelo McCormick keeps and maintains a common nuisance, a place where intoxicating liquors were kept and sold contrary to law and to ordinance #26. Fined $100 and costs plus 30 days in jail. Execution stayed for 30 days. Pd. $20.50." Mayor and Council made an order remitting unpaid portion of fine and cummuting the jail sentence. There is only one more occurrence of a violation of the Liquor Ordinance by Angelo and that happens 28 Oct 1901. The fine and sentence are the same with the Council again remitting the fine and commuting the sentence. This entry in the Police Docket is interesting because if gives the location of Angelo's club house. "....in a certain one story frame building situated on Lot 24, Block 15 of this city...".20 Looking at a plot map for the city of Scammon places the establishment on Main Street, facing West on the southernmost block of the city. The increase in the fine and the jail sentence have the effect of removing Angelo's name from any more appearances in the Police Docket.19 "....Report of the Police Judge read and the following were reported as having violated the Prohibitory Liquor Ordinance on the 29th day of August: Angelo McCormick, Joe Crilly, and Jno Murray."21 Angelo McCormick violated ordinances #7 article #2 section #11 of the ordinances of the City of Scammon by playing a game of chance for money and other goods in the places of businesss of Joe Crilly and Angelo McCormick. Fined $3 and $3.25 court cost.19 A. McCormick entered a plea of guilty to becoming drunk and intoxicated to the annoyance of certain citizens. Fined $2.50 and $1.50 court costs.19
A. McCormick and wife have rented the Reno Building north of Quarton's and will open in a few days.22
The following appeared in the local paper: Angelo McCormick, janitor of the miner's hall, was badly burned Saturday evening by an explosion of a lamp. He was occupied in the lighting of the lamps for the evening in the hall when one of the large lamps exploded, the burning oil poured over the unfortunate man, burning his arms and head in a terrible manner. The flesh peeled off of his right arm from the bone so badly was the arm seared by the burning oil.23 Angelo McCormick was head of household in the 1910 US Census of Mineral Twp, Scammon City, Cherokee County, Kansas, with Katherine Stewart and Mary Grace McCormick in the same household.24 Angelo McCormick was coalminer in January 1920 at Parnnassus, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.25 Angelo McCormick was head of household in the 1920 US Census of Lower Burnell Twp, Parnnassus, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, with Katherine Stewart and Mary Grace McCormick in the same household; Angelo is indicated as a coal miner and Mary Grace works as a secretary at an aluminum plant.26
