Clarence Monroe Lewis 1
Robert E. Lewis: Born in a small log cabin about 2 miles north of the town of Meadows of Dan, in Patrick County, Virginia, which served as the post office and gave the name to the area. The property, however, was in Floyd County, Virginia. The site is currently (1994) within the boundary of the Blue Ridge parkway, perhaps 200 yards from the roadway, and about a quarter of a mile southwest of the Mabry Mill. The cabin was situated on a hillside sloping downward in a northerly direction toward the Laurel Fork (the Creek which supplies the water for the Mabry Mill and formerly for the Agee mill about two miles west). It sat on a tiny flat site with a spring about 30 feet west which supplied the water for the family. In September 1994 the spring was yielding a small trickle of water, which, with some cleaning and boxing of the site, could supply enough for a family's needs. The small stream flowed northward toward the Laurel Fork. According to Leonard Agee, who guided me (REL) to the site, the property had extended to beyond the top of the ridge to the south, which was the county line and perhaps 50-100 yards away. At that time, some of the area had been cleared for farming, but now the forest has grown back and is covered with tall deciduous trees. The undergrowth is not especially heavy, and the ground had a mat of leaves. Remains of the fireplace and chimney were still at the site in 1994. The fireplace opening was toward the east away from the spring. The fireplace opening was about 4-5 feet high and the chimney extended about two more feet, making the total height remaining about seven feet. No mortar remained except at the base of the fireplace. The rocks were mainly of a tannish color and flat.2
