The following appeared in the Scammon paper: An outing party consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Alf. Lewis and baby, Misses Mary Grady, Grace McCormick, Adelia Fern, and Anna Grady spent yesterday at Riverside park. The day was unusually enjoyed by all, little thinking of the serious accident which did happen on their return trip. Leaving Riverside coming home while endeavoring to climb the big hill, the car was unable to climb it and started back down the hill. In less time than it takes to tell it the car ran off the side and upset, pinning all the occupants under it. The young ladies managed to lift up and crawl out one at a time, but Alf and his wife and baby were pinned fast. The girls lifting, gave them breathing spells, and for assistance coming soon, they might have been subjects for the undertaker now. The entire party were more or less scratched and bruised. Alf is not able to be at his store this morning. The car was broken considerably. The party came back on the Pittsburg, Joplin street car.4 Mary Grace McCormick was a teacher at Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas.5 She was a typist in January 1920 at Parnnassus, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.6 The 1920 US Census listed Mary Grace McCormick along with Katherine Stewart in the household of Angelo McCormick in Lower Burnell Twp, Parnnassus, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania.7
