Terence Joseph O'Grady
Terence was born in Hermiston, Oregon, the 6th of 7 children. He attended West Park Grade School and later moved to Portland, OR and attended St. Rose Grade School and Central Catholic High School. Terence transferred to and graduated from Mount Angel Seminary High School in May of 1972. He then attended Portland State University in Portland from September of 1972 until June of 1974. He completed college and graduated from the University of San Francisco with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in June of 1976. Soon after, he entered the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, California, obtaining a Master's Degree in Divinity in June of 1979. Terence then began the Master's Program in Social Work at Portland State in September of 1981. He completed his work on a Master of Social Work degree at San Francisco State University in August of 1986. Terence began an 11 year stint of working at St. Mary's Hospital in San Francisco in 1976 as a psychiatric technician and completed his social work internship there as well in 1987, later obtaining his license. He worked per diem at Pacific Presbyterian Psychatric Institute from 1980 to 1981 and 1982 to 1987. He worked as an inpatient Psychiatric Social Worker at St. Lukes Hospital from 1987 until the end of 1982. Terence also served as a consultant for Family Service Agency from September of 1900 on. Terence spoke some Spanish, so did some clinical work using this language. Terence was active in the Front Runners Running Club and Dignity of San Francisco until 1992, the Harvery Milk Gay Democratic Club in 1983 and the Martin de Porres House of Hospitality from 1976-1980. He belonged to the National Association of Social Workers. Terence was best know for the positive attitude which he conveyed and his generosity of spirit. The sparkle in his eyes, his big heart and his winning smile made him very lovable. His ability to make friends throughout his life and remain in touch with them was noteworthy. Terence maintained many interests: reading, theater, movies,running, tennis,swimming, hiking, cooking, dancing, gardening, cycling, the symphony, playing the flute, advocating human rights and health issues-just to name some of the more significant ones. He proudly completed a marathon at San Francisco in 1986 for Gay Games 11 and another at Vancouver, B. C., in 1990 for Gay Games 111. Terence was diagnosed with AIDS in October of 1992, and following a 6 week period of hopitalization, began recovery-only to struggle with a rapid and intense decline in physical condition during the following 2 1/2 months. He died peacefully while asleep at home in Colma, CA on February 12, 1993. He was 38 years old. --from the Memorial Mass for Terence Joseph O'Grady.

Terence died on 12 February 1993 at Colma, San Mateo County, California, at age 38.
