John was enumerated with John Fern Sr on the census of 1 June 1880 at Mineral Twp, Cherokee County, Kansas, as John Ferns. John is listed as a single white male 18 years of age. He works as a coal miner and was born in Scotland. Both of his parents were born in Ireland.5

John Fern ll married Mary Cummiskey on 21 May 1890 at Pittsburg, Crawford County, Kansas.6

The following appeared in the Scammon paper dated 20 Sep 1907: Mr. John Fern and Barney Brady spent 4 days last week at Oswego, fishing. They report a good time and plenty of fish.9

An obituary was in the local newspaper: John Fern, 66, a resident of Cherokee county the past 50 years dropped dead about 5:30 Wednesday afternoon at the Central garage here. A doctor immediately called and pronounced it heart disease. Surviving are two sons, Joe L. Fern, Scammon and Francis Fern of Kansas City; four daughters, Miss Ella and Tess Fern, both of Kansas City. Mrs G. W. Gardes of Washington, D.C. and Mrs A. W. Wieland of Norton;three sisters, Mrs John Gillespie of Youngstown, Ohio; Mother Mary Bridget of Nerienx, Ky., and Sister M. Edgmond of St. Louis, and three brothers, Francis M. Fern of Pittsburg, and James E. Fern and Joe P. Fern, both of Scammon.11 He was buried at St. Bridget's Cemetery, Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas.12
