"A true friend"

Dear Editor:

Several days ago my wife and I attended a small graveside funeral service for a man who was not only one of the strongest Democrats I have ever known, but a true believer in the American political process.

I am speaking of Gene Masterson.

Gene loved and lived for the Democrat party.

I first met Gene at Sam Roper's home in 1993. After Sam introduced us the first words Gene said to me were: "Glad to meet you. Are you Republican or Democrat?" After answering that I was a Democrat, Gene gave me one of his ear to ear grins and I could read what his mind was saying, "Fresh meat."

Gene was a tireless, behind the scenes, political worker and I am sure many current and past officer holders will attest to that fact.

Gene was from the "Old School" political venue and his "cronies" were such people as "Papa Joe", Sam Roper and Joan Finney.

Although Gene's memorial service was a small affair it did include the United States Air Force honor guard and at least seven current and past state county office holders. Governor Sebelius also sent a letter of condolence.

What impressed me as much as anything was the presence of Rob and Bette Lesson. Rob is the Chairman of the Crawford County Republican Party. Today I asked Bette why she and Rob attended Gene's service. She seemed shocked that I would ask such a question and answered, "We had to. Gene was a true friend."

Gene, I will forever miss that mischievous twinkle in your eyes.

Bill Crawford.
