Joseph was enumerated with Hannah Gavin on the census of 1 June 1920 at Mineral Twp, Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas, as Joseph Thayer. Joseph is a 15 year old single white male. He is listed as a grand son and was born in Missouri. He can read and write and his father was born in Missouri and his mother was born in Ireland.5
Joe was 5'9" and stayed in shape all his life. He boxed at 154 lbs.6
Joe Thayer and Tip O'Neil of Joplin gave the fans a nice exhibition of fiscial practice, for the semi-windup program. Both boys did remarkably well, and are destined for future developement. They may feel there is difference but the fans seemed willing to call it a draw. Baldy Davidson of Stippville and Leo Harrigan showed some dexterity in a four round preliminary, the laurals going to Harrigan on points.7

The following appeared in the Scammon paper: Billy Atkinson has expanded the boxing era here in Scammon to a regular 'den' and has now several promising young men training at his 'punchroom' working out daily under his supervision both in training and boxing matches booked for them with various combatants of the fistic ring.Billy is expecting a bout himself soon with Duke Trammel at Hutchinson. Joe Thayer, 154-lbs, who put Jess Baugh of Joplin to sleep, on a recent card, is now on a program to fight at Springfield, MO., next Thursday. Loren Atkinson, 19, brother of Billy, who is now fighting as a welter on the Pacific coast is expected to be here soon to join the gang of mit pushers.9
Joseph Thayer married Margaret Rose Gallagher on 20 March 1931 at Bentonville, Benton County, Arkansas.1
Joe Thayer worked in the mines at Gamerco and was a cager. He operated the lifts that took the miners down to their work sites. Their were two tipples in Gamerco.10
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Thayer and family, of New Mexico, are spending their vacation with Mrs. Thayer's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Gallagher.11

Joseph Thayer died on 4 March 1965 at Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas, at age 60.1 He was buried after 4 March 1965 at St Bridget's Cemetery, Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas.12,1
