The following appeared in the Scammon Miner dated 16 Dec 1904: To the Scammon Miner of Scammon: I wish to say a few words in praise of the present city officials in their effort to do the right thing for the citizens they represent. City Marshall who for some reason or another has collected more poll and other taxes than any of his predecessors and why? Is it because the population has increased, or from whatever source you or others may claim for it, let it be what it may, what right have the saloons and gambling dens to be open on Sunday? Has the gambling element a right to pay a fine in order to violate the law? My answer to this is no, a thousand times no. If a law says gambling shall go on, it does not mean to say that officers of this and other cities have right to collect a fine and let the offenders excape the law as reads. The working people should insist on all laws being rigidly enforced and all violators of the same severly punished for the same. And the only way to enforce the laws is by public sentiment Interestingly, the City Marshall would be Thomas Brady's uncle William Grady.7
